Understanding BMI
What your Body Mass Index tells you — and what it doesn't
What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight. It is used by doctors and health professionals worldwide as a quick screening tool to identify potential weight problems in adults.
How Is It Calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. For example, someone who is 70kg and 1.75m tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9.
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and muscular people may have a high BMI but low body fat. It is best used alongside other health measures such as waist circumference and blood pressure.
Healthy Lifestyle Tips
If your BMI is outside the healthy range, small changes make a big difference. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and drink 6–8 glasses of water daily.
